HOW DID YOU MEET:

We’d know each other forever! In fact, almost a decade ago, I (Betsy) was on the singer-songwriter scene and Daniel would back me up on drums. We played shows as a duo, but had no relationship beyond “Here’s the sheet music. Let’s play it!”

After that, I led another band that Daniel was in, and we played together every week for 6 years. He kept to himself, and I was always intimidated by him because he seemed so serious and private.

After my divorce (Betsy), he started texting me to check in on me, which was really sweet and unexpected, since we’d never really spoken. As the months went on, he kept following up on me, just to make sure I was still okay. I started getting excited every time the phone would buzz, hoping that it was him. It always was. We were texting at all hours, laughing and enjoying each other. He was not serious or intimidating— turns out he was kind, attentive, generous, and supportive. And silly!

After a few months of texting, we went on two dates, and that’s all it took! We both knew immediately that this was it. We were in!!

WEDDING STYLE: Intimate/enchanting/diy

THE WEDDING DAY:

We didn’t plan for this to be our wedding day!

Our plan was to quickly get together with my pastor friend, just to sign the paperwork and do the legal minimum. We would have a “big wedding” later on.

Unfortunately we learned that Daniel’s best friend Dustin was not able to attend the later-on wedding, and it was really important to Daniel to have Dustin be a part of the wedding. So we added a few extras to this day to make it feel more like a wedding than a board meeting, for Dustin’s sake. We are so glad we did!

We ended up loving our little elopement so much that we’ve lost interest in doing the “big wedding” later. This was our wedding day, and it was perfect!

My favorite part was when my toddler needed to be held mid-ceremony, and he brought with him an “Elmo Potty Time” book, complete with push-buttons that make sounds. Our final prayer of benediction was accompanied by the sounds of Elmo’s toilet flushing. It was hilarious.

WEDDING FOOD:

Hot N’ Readys! Champagne & cupcakes. (Sparkling apple juice for the kiddos) I love the mix of fancy and trashy.

ANY TIPS ON GUESTS, FAMILY:

We had both been married before, (and it was Covid!) so none of our families were upset by the idea of a micro-elopement.

BUDGET SAVING IDEAS:

We didn’t have anyone “stand up” in the wedding because it doesn’t functionally do anything to change the service, and just costs money.

We also knew exactly what photos we wanted, so we worked hard to communicate that to Jess and respect the photographer’s time!

I did my own hair & makeup, and made my own bouquet from my own garden and (shhh) a few strategic roadsides for the lilies.

TIPS FOR FUTURE BADASS BRIDES:

Be flexible! Be open to the magic of the moment as it finds you, and only uphold traditions if they are meaningful to you!
