DESCRIPTION OF THE WEDDING DAY:

We had our first look in a small garden near downtown Seattle. My dress got caught on so many things walking down the path to meet her. We were both nervous but immediately so happy and excited as soon as we saw each other. We did some fun portraits around the venue (Sole Repair in Capitol Hill).

It all became real for me as I walked down the aisle. Having my partner in front of me and all our friends and family cheering us on was a surreal experience. We said our vows and I remember looking out into the crowd and to see a lot of people crying, including people I hadn’t met yet! We had a cocktail hour where we mingled and my heart was overflowing to have so many people important to us in one place.

My wife(!) cut the cake but it was frozen, so she could only get a tiny little piece off of the top – one of my favorite wedding photos is of the small sad cake slice. Our first dance was to Pocketful of Rainbows by Elvis. We danced for a while with friends and family, then ended the night at the bar where we had our first date.

ANY TIPS ON GUESTS, FAMILY:

Set your boundaries because it’s your day! We limited plus ones for most people since it was a small and intimate wedding. I think picking and choosing who you do this with is key, because some people might not enjoy the event as much if they don’t have a plus one and some probably don’t care. In the end, it’s your event and you’re paying for them, so it’s your choice!

ANY AWESOME BUDGET SAVING IDEAS:

I got my dress second-hand online. There are a variety of sites you can buy preowned dresses on. I tried it on in-store to make sure it fit but found it for about 50% of the cost, never worn!

ANY TIPS ON GIFT IDEAS HOW TO HANDLE THIS:

We didn’t really need “things”, already living together and have all we need. Our registry was just a list of charities important to us (reproductive rights, environmental causes). Some people still wrote us checks, but we just didn’t need more stuff in our house.

DID YOU DO WEDDING FAVOURS IF SO WHAT:

We did coffee and donuts to take away. We probably could have done something a little more creative but it was a low priority since we were doing all the planning.

TIPS FOR FUTURE BADASS BRIDES:

Enjoy the day and don’t stress if things don’t go “as planned.” I was surprised that my favorite parts of the wedding were things I didn’t expect to love so much (portraits, cocktail hour, etc.) and the part that didn’t go amazingly was the dancing  (very few guests who enjoyed dancing attended). I kept trying to rally people to dance and felt a bit awkward afterward, I wish I just let it go and enjoyed myself!
