Ailsa and Austin

COUPLE NAMES: Ailsa and Austin

INSTAGRAM NAMES: @ailsa_  @ausmaddon

WEDDING DATE: 18/09/18

WEDDING LOCATION: Yosemite National Park, California

WHERE DID YOU MEET: In Florida while I was taking a year out between degrees.

WEDDING THEME: Elopement in the mountains

We started our day off by getting ready in separate rooms in a little cabin in Yosemite, making sure not to see each other (we like to stick to some traditions!). After having our first look in a secluded part of the park, we proceeded to do some portraits at a beautiful viewpoint looking out onto Yosemite’s most famous landmarks. We were lucky enough to be accompanied by our amazing photographers (@thehearnes) and our talented videographers (@nikonej) for the entire day which honestly made it feel like we were exploring the park with a group of friends. Since nobody (not even our families) knew we were getting married, it was really important for us to document the day and to be able to have something to show our loved ones afterwards.

Since I am born and raised in Scotland and my now-husband is a native of California, we really wanted to plan a day that reflected both of us and our cultures.
We chose the stunning mountains of Yosemite National Park in California as the setting for our wedding and incorporated a few different Scottish elements along the way: my husband wore a kilt and we had a quaich ceremony after saying our vows. As a surprise for my husband, I wore some little white cowboy boots from Free People to reflect his passion for agriculture (and general love of cowboy boots!).

We visited a few different spots in Yosemite, hiked around, laughed and chatted away with our crew. Without the stresses of strict timelines, speeches and other traditional wedding features, our day was extremely relaxed and allowed us to just enjoy one another’s company.

Just before sunset, we made it to our ceremony location. We were blown away by how gorgeous it was; the beauty of the sky’s colours as the sun set is something that will stick with us forever. Our wonderful officiant had the most beautiful ceremony prepared for us and we both shed some happy tears as we said said our vows. After the ceremony, we danced to Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is” on top of the mountains and enjoyed our first moments of newlywed bliss.

DID YOU DO FOOD AND IF SO WHAT: We spent the whole of our wedding day hiking up mountains, through forests and exploring beautiful Yosemite, so we didn’t have time for food, unfortunately. The day after, however, I surprised my husband (who has a HUGE sweet tooth) with a gorgeous cake from @sweetdreamsweddings.

ANY AWESOME BUDGET SAVING IDEAS: Ask yourself if you truly need something; if you find yourself looking at things you *think* you need just because of tradition, then don’t do it.
And for the things you do really want, shop around to see if you can find the same thing but cheaper. I bought lots of my accessories from Etsy, where I was able to get some gorgeous hand-crafted items from all over the world and for a fraction of the price compared to high-end wedding boutiques. I found that to be much for special and personal too!

TIPS FOR FUTURE BADASS BRIDES: Do YOU! And by “you”, I mean both of you. A wedding means two people getting married, so make sure that your partner has a say as well and that aspects of them are involved as well.
Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something that reflects who you are as a couple. At the end of the day, it’s YOUR wedding. If you have your heart set on something, go for it. If you want to totally leave out another, why not! You want to have a day on which you can look back and not regret a thing.
For us, that meant running away to the mountains and saying our vows on the edge of a cliff in private. For others, it might mean the most extravagant Cinderella-style wedding. Listen to your heart and you won’t go wrong.
